I started designing the magazine properly today, focusing on the style
of the layout as well as the layout of the grid. I have decided to get
very very simple and have only 4 columns per page. Hopefully this will
make the magazine appear very clear and give me some restriction.
However I guess in some cases, for example text inside coloured boxes,
the grid will have to be modified to fit my new designs.
Firstly I have altered the main image for the front cover to one of my own pictures instead of one from the net. This is the best image I could find of El Capitan that I took, I think that the trees in the foreground and the the rock in the back shows the scale of it somehow. You can also see some trees on top which are dwarfed by the rock making the image good at describing the size of the cliff face.
I have also started work on the inside here with an inside title page and content page. This version is pretty low-key, id like to add to it somehow without changing the 'tone' that the cover sets.
I added this reminder text to the bottom of the content page. It is basically to warn people that not everything in the book can be taken as 100% correct, due the the changing circumstances of the wall. Also because people need to prepare extensively and this publication is pretty basic.
Here I have added some title chapters after working out how the book will be constructed and planning content for each page. I also had to shift the numbers so they started at 2 and make some other minor adjustments. I added some colour too. I will stick with this dark blue and red-orange colour scheme throughout the publication.
In the final version of this spread I changed the chapters again after the revision of my content and got rid of the warning. I have decided that the book will become more of a fanzine for those who are interested in climbing El Capitan. There is no, 'one-way' to climb El Cap and now I know that there is no way I could responsibly write a guide to climb it. Instead I will do research and gather data which will allow the zine to serve as a starter guide and to tell stories of general interest. This way I could hopefully make the publication interesting to all people, including climbers.
In this design I also added some horizontal lines to the background of the title page. This is for pure aesthetic reasons.
