TYPE AND GRID// Decoding Layouts

These first two images are from the Magazine Shortlist, unfortunately it follows a totally erratic grid system that is weirdly reflected, inverted and almost entirely different on every page. What is suspect is that the magazine is written in segments and each one i.e, technology or music, has a different layout specific to that section. Its all very confusing, perhaps that's why the magazine is to hard to read.

Here I moved on to a pretty simple grid I found on a student housing paper. This paper uses a simple 5 columns on each page.

Although on the second page it was not clear where I could fit this column through the images, all I had to do was use the fully mapped out page placed above to work it out.

I used a Line Gauge to measure the point sizes of the body copy and the line leading. To do this I measured out 10 lines and used some simple maths to work out that the point size of the text is 8'5 and the leading is 3.5. This means the text is laid out at 8.5p on 12p.
